The 2009 Pilot has been recognized as a "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, earning the best possible rating in IIHS frontal offset, side impact and rear crash-protection tests.
The Pilot’s long list of standard safety features includes the proprietary Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with traction control and anti-lock braking system, three-row side curtain airbags with a rollover sensor and dual-stage, dual-threshold front airbags. The Pilot is also equipped with four Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH) positions—more than any other SUV currently in its segment.

The reviews are in, and the new Pilot is making the grade. Motor Trend touts the Pilot’s spacious interior, noting that passengers will appreciate “…the superbly redesigned center console that provides twice the capacity of any competitor's, multiple bins, supersize cupholders, 12V powerpoints—even an iPod-friendly USB port and 115V outlet in the Touring [model].” They are also fans of the Pilot’s smooth ride: “…those who genuinely prefer comfortable, controlled cruising to high-intensity corner-carving will love the 2009 Pilot's even more surefooted demeanor and improved ride.”
The Edmunds.com review of the Pilot is as strong as the vehicle itself. They point out that “. ..the Pilot sets itself apart from the crossover competition because it values real utility, not just comfort and convenience. It gets there by applying truck-think—appreciation for practical, intelligent function. In the end the Honda Pilot never forgets that trucklike utility is part of its job description.”
Edmunds also loves the functional, spacious interior: “The glovebox is divided into three spaces, the center console is spacious (and naturally configured for a mobile phone and the usual audio accessories) and there are bins and cupholders and power outlets and tie-down hooks everywhere you look. There's even a storage box integrated into the driver side of the cargo area, while another 2.8 cubic feet of storage has been created beneath the cargo floor.... you can flip, slide, fold or tumble almost everything, creating a magic box of miraculous space-efficiency.”

The 2009 Pilot has received 5-star frontal- and 5-star side-impact crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Every Pilot comes standard with such safety features as Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, anti-lock braking (ABS) and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). Plus, six airbags, including side curtain airbags with a rollover sensor, help protect driver and passengers in sufficient impacts.*

According to USA Today, the new Pilot is "pretty close to wonderful." The editors laud the interior, saying "Wider than most rivals, it feels generously spacious and makes three-across child seats plausible." They also note that "The center stack up front bristles with buttons and controls. Intimidating at first, but quickly learned, and far better than trying to minimize the number of controls via joystick system or multiple-choice menu…"
As for the Pilot’s dynamics, they have praise for that too: "Handling that’s important to most people most of the time—maneuvering in tight spots and parking in crowded lots— was excellent because of a compact turning circle and good visibility."
